Complete Guide to Material Selection for CNC Machining

Choosing the right material is crucial for your project success. Our comprehensive guide covers 30+ materials.

Material selection guide for CNC machining

Start from the application, not only the drawing

Material selection affects machining time, tool wear, surface finish, dimensional stability, and final cost. A drawing may specify a material, but the application explains why that material matters.

Before production, it is useful to confirm whether the part needs corrosion resistance, conductivity, low weight, high wear resistance, or stable dimensions after heat treatment.

Common CNC machining materials

Aluminum is often selected for light weight, good machinability, and clean anodized finishes. Stainless steel is used when corrosion resistance and strength are important. Copper and brass are common for conductivity and precision components. Tool steels and alloy steels are chosen for wear resistance and mechanical strength.

  • Aluminum 5052, 6061, and 6063 for lightweight machined parts.
  • Stainless steel SUS304, 316, 416, and 430 series for strength and corrosion resistance.
  • Copper, brass, alloy steel, and titanium alloy for specialized requirements.

A practical selection process

The most reliable approach is to match material, tolerance, finish, and batch size at the quotation stage. This helps the machining team choose a route that is realistic for both quality and delivery.
